subcutaneous
Themes for me in dance rarely were pursued too literally. They provided an anchor to a mood, to relationships between dancers, and as a suggested focus to view the dance. Themes also helped me search for new ways to move or combine movements.
For Subcutaneous, premiered in 2010, I liked the idea of things hidden beneath the surface. It's the old adage that things are not always as they seem.
Two notes: During the choreographing period, my dancer Caitlin Stanley broke her foot, compliments of an overactive large dog that slammed into her. I had to take her out of the dance, of course, and she was going to sit out the entire concert. I felt determined to get her into the concert. The trio section in this dance was the result. Caitlin never put weight on that foot by the design of the choreography, her diligence, and the impeccable care of her two partners, Gonzalo Valdez and Yurek Hansen.
The duet here was originally part of an earlier dance and the first time I used costumes as part of choreography. I now feel it is more at home in this dance and thus resides here.
