One Oh One
In 2010, after I realized I had choreographed 100 dances, I decided for my 101st to give myself permission to make a dance in five sections with each one a complete unit of its own. Each section is its own distinct dance. I liked not having to make a grand statement but rather indulge in tapping various parts of me. Of course, in both dance and music the sections of a larger work often are rather distinct and not necessarily thematically linked. In this case, I made no attempt at all toward consistency, rather indulging in shorter self-contained pieces. The music varies in style and sound also.
The first section begins quite dark. Live on stage, the lighting was dark to create an atmospheric mood, but on video it is just dark. It will brighten after a minute or so. This reveals the challenge of getting good quality video of dance. To do so would require a dedicated video session with lighting set for recording instead of an audience. This was impossible for us to arrange. I was limited to videoing live performances only.
